SMALL KITCHEN RENOVATIONS

Small kitchen.
More possibility.

A thoughtful small-kitchen renovation begins with better use of the space you already have.

Make the existing space earn its place.

A small kitchen does not need every feature from a larger one. It needs the right balance of accessible storage, useful prep space and room to move. Start by noticing where clutter builds up and where everyday tasks become awkward.

Find the wasted space first

Look at the contents of each cabinet, unused corners, the area above upper cabinets and the way food is stored. Taller storage can be useful, but frequently used items still need to be accessible. A small step stool should not be the answer to every daily task.

Test the doors and drawers

Appliance doors, cabinet doors and entry doors can compete for the same floor area. Check those movements together. A kitchen that looks clear on a plan may feel crowded when a dishwasher is open.

Keep the work surface useful.

List the small appliances you leave out and the ones you use occasionally. Storage near a suitable outlet may free counter space, but electrical requirements need review. Keep an area for food preparation that does not also serve as the only place for deliveries, dishes and household paperwork.

Choose an island only after checking circulation.

A compact peninsula, a moveable table or no island at all may serve a small room better. The right option depends on access, seating needs and clearances. Your final layout needs site measurement and appliance specifications.

Use finishes to support the room.

A coherent cabinet, countertop and backsplash palette can make a compact kitchen feel calmer. Consider reflectivity, under-cabinet lighting, cleaning needs and the existing light in the room. A simple finish is not a substitute for a useful plan, but it can help that plan feel settled.

Your small-kitchen priority list

  • Identify the three most frustrating everyday tasks.
  • Separate daily storage from occasional storage.
  • Confirm appliance sizes and door movements.
  • Choose usable prep space before adding extra seating.
  • Compare keeping the layout with changing it.
