Plan surfaces as one composition.
Countertops and backsplashes meet at one of the most visible parts of your kitchen. Compare samples beside the cabinet finish, hardware and floor rather than choosing each item in isolation.
Countertop decisions beyond colour
Discuss the material, edge profile, thickness, seam locations, sink cutout and required support. Ask for the manufacturer’s current care guidance and confirm what templating, fabrication and installation include.
The backsplash details
Tile size, pattern, grout, edge treatment and outlet positions all affect the finished wall. A full-height slab creates different fabrication and installation requirements from tile. Review where the finish starts and stops, including windows, open shelves and the range area.
Can you keep the existing cabinets?
A surface refresh starts with the condition and fit of what remains. Have the cabinet boxes, support and installation checked before committing to a new countertop. Removing an existing surface may expose repairs or make retaining the backsplash impractical.
Compare material care honestly.
| Consideration | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Everyday cleaning | Which cleaners and routines does the manufacturer recommend? |
| Heat & spills | What protection is needed and which exposures should be avoided? |
| Seams & pattern | Where will joins fall and how will pattern direction be handled? |
| Sink & fixtures | Who confirms cutouts, holes, supports and connection responsibilities? |
| Quote scope | Are removal, disposal, templating, installation and reconnecting included? |
Coordinate the sequence.
Final templating normally depends on the installation being ready for the fabricator’s requirements. Confirm the sequence for cabinetry, countertop templating, fabrication, backsplash and fixture connections. Do not assume every stage can happen on the same day.
For a broader renovation, review the whole kitchen scope before selecting surfaces.
